The Craft
Woven in Italy by Tessitura Pardi, the Anfora tablecloth draws its imagery from Renaissance frescoes and historic Umbrian tapestries. The family-run mill, established in 1949, uses traditional shuttle looms to combine natural flax and cotton fibres. This slow mechanical process creates a mid-weight textile with a distinct structural grain—a quality entirely different from high-speed, modern industrial weaving.
The Design
A dense Jacquard weave spreads across the surface, displaying a detailed layout of leaves, flowers, and classical amphora motifs. Woven with two contrasting yarn tones, the lighter pattern catches the light against the deeper background to give the imagery clear definition without overwhelming the eye. The outer edges are finished with a precise, traditional hemstitched border, ensuring a clean, straight drop across all sides of the table.
The Fabric
The linen and cotton blend combines the crisp, structural body of flax with the natural softness of cotton yarns. Resilient and highly durable, these natural fibres absorb moisture efficiently and become increasingly supple with every wash. The heavy weight of the fabric allows it to drape smoothly over table corners, providing a steady foundation for casual meals and formal dining alike.
Care Instructions
- Machine Wash: Wash at up to 40°C on a gentle or medium cycle using a mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, which can leave a residue on raw linen fibres.
- Bleaching: Do not use chlorine bleach or optical brighteners, as these will alter the natural flax and sage green tones.
- Drying: Line dry out of direct sunlight to prevent uneven fading. Do not tumble dry, as high heat can weaken the natural fibres and cause excessive shrinkage.
- Ironing: Iron while the fabric is still damp, using a high heat setting. For the best finish, iron on the reverse side to protect the raised texture of the Jacquard weave and the hemstitched border.
