Handmade home decor pieces are quite different to mass produced items. As a result, they look very different in the home and in most cases should be approached a little differently. Artisan items are typically of premium quality, made with care and passion. One of the main characteristics is that when an item is handcrafted, often no two are the same.

Artisan-made decor often features signs and indications that they have been made by hand. These ‘flaws’ are often subtle at first, as they are rarely made intentionally, but they simply add to the charm and character of the piece.
There’s something truly special about the fact that a maker leaves a mark. When something has been made so lovingly, it’s nice to see that human touch. These differences between pieces should be celebrated, as it’s the ‘flaws’ that make every single item completely unique.
Take a moment to identify the differences in your artisan-made homeware, getting to know each item and understanding the process that goes into making it. Often with mass produced items we take a ‘more is more’ approach. When homewares aren’t made or purchased with much thought or care, they can typically feel less meaningful.
Of course many of us own pieces that were made in a factory that are still special to us, because of the occasion or story that we can attribute to that item when we purchased it, but for the most part, mass produced items have little meaning behind them, and therefore feel less impactful.
Because of this, many of us have a tendency to fill our homes up with lots of insignificant designs. Artisan-made pieces feel quite the opposite. They are more striking in the space, carry more weight and feel more meaningful. For this reason, instead of focusing on filling your home, focus on introducing a few key quality pieces.

As above, handmade home decor can be really striking in any room. When you start to invest in artisan decor, you’ll quickly fall in love. Handmade typically looks high quality, with an organic feel to it. This is a look that you can carry throughout your entire home, and can even become the centre of your interior style.
For example, try handmade organic linen tea towels and tablecloths in the kitchen, linen bath towels in the bathroom, artisan-made cushions and throws on beds and sofas, original artwork on the walls, and handblown glassware in your entrance hall. The list goes on.

A cohesive look from room to room will help create a flow throughout your house. Tie rooms together using colours, textures and themes, such as designs with a focus on florals or botanicals.
